Trujillo Adobe

The Trujillo Adobe property was donated to the Riverside County Regional Park and Open-Space District (RivCoParks) in 1972. In 2025, RivCoParks acquired additional surrounding properties to protect the historic setting of the adobe and support the development of the Trujillo Adobe Heritage Village Project. Today, RivCoParks is leading efforts to preserve the historic structure and develop the surrounding area as a publicly accessible heritage destination within the County park system.

RivCoParks is working closely with the Trujillo Family, and the Spanish Town Heritage Foundation, preservation specialists and community partners to guide the planning and future rehabilitation of the site. Through this collaborative effort, RivCoParks is committed to protecting this historic resource while providing safe public access and educational opportunities for residents and visitors.

History of the Trujillo

The Trujillo Adobe is one of the oldest surviving structures in Riverside County and the last visible above-ground remnant connected to the historic San Salvador community. The adobe was built by members of the Trujillo Family, descendants of early settler Lorenzo Trujillo, whose family helped establish the nearby communities of Agua Mansa and La Placita along the Santa Ana River.

In 1862, a devastating flood destroyed much of the surrounding settlement. After the flood, the Trujillo family moved to higher ground and built the adobe at its current location. The home remained in the Trujillo family for generations and became an important part of the region’s early ranching and farming community. Today, the adobe stands as a rare reminder of the early communities that helped shape Riverside County and the people who lived and worked along the Santa Ana River.

Over time, exposure to weather and structural deterioration—including roof failure and partial wall collapse—have significantly impacted the building. Rehabilitation is now needed to stabilize and preserve the adobe for future generations.

The Project

The Trujillo Adobe Heritage Village Project will restore the historic adobe and develop the surrounding property so the public can safely visit and learn about the site’s history.

The project includes stabilizing and rehabilitating the adobe structure, as well as adding site improvements such as accessible pathways, utilities, landscaping, and visitor-support facilities. These improvements will help preserve the adobe while allowing the site to serve as a cultural and educational destination for residents, students, and visitors. Once completed, the site will serve as a publicly accessible cultural and educational destination that interprets the region’s early history and supports community engagement.

Community participation is an important part of the Trujillo Adobe Heritage Village Project. A community workshop is planned for this spring to share project updates and gather input as planning continues. Current Project Status

The project is currently in the planning phase. These efforts will help determine the improvements needed to preserve the structure and safely open the site to the public. The results of this planning work will guide the next phase of the project, which includes construction and site improvements.

Future Phase

2028–2029: Construction and site improvements, including structural rehabilitation of the adobe and development of visitor-supporting infrastructure.
